Thank you for contacting me about the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme.
The scheme, which allocates up to £42 million per year, provides grants to cover the VAT expenses associated with repair and conservation of listed places of worship. This includes conservation efforts for monuments situated in listed places of worship. These grants apply when the monument is an integral part of the building's structure.
The scheme handles around 7,000 claims per year and, as of December 2024, had made grants totalling over £350 million.
Prior to the general election, the previous Government announced that the scheme will run until 31 March 2025. I find it extremely concerning that the new Government is refusing to commit to the future of the scheme. This scheme is a vital lifeline for the custodians of historic churches. These places can provide unique space for rest, contemplation and well-being.
It should also be noted that the National Lottery Heritage Fund is similarly able to support the repair and modernisation of building services and facilities in historic places of worship. If you are interested in accessing this support, I would recommend contacting representatives of the fund in your local area who can provide guidance on how to apply.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
