Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, met two local apprentices from Beverley and Bishop Burton during their visit to the Houses of Parliament to mark National Apprenticeship Week.
To promote the importance of both apprentices and the hospitality sector, more than 200 apprentices from across the UK were invited to Parliament for the Hospitality Apprenticeship Showcase. There was barely room to move as employers, talented apprentices and proud parents came together to celebrate their work and remember the vital role the hospitality sector plays in all of our communities, employing 3.5 million people across the country.
Graham was delighted to spend time chatting to Callum Lax and Spencer Chappel Spain who made the journey down from Beverley with their proud parents to mark this important week. Spencer is two months into his apprenticeship at The Altisidora in Bishop Burton, where he is learning key skills such as customer service. He recommended their delicious Mac and Cheese, which Graham promised to try next time he was in the village. Callum is an apprentice at the King’s Head in Beverley and is enjoying his work in the kitchen where he is learning how to make mouthwatering food such as their hand stretched pizza.
National Apprenticeship Week runs from 5th-11th February and is now in its 17th year. Approximately 70% of occupations are now accessible via apprenticeships, meaning people can start a career in anything from engineering to accounting, gain experience in the industry and earn money while doing so.
Callum Lax, an apprentice at the King’s Head in Beverley, said: “It was fantastic to travel down to Parliament to meet Graham and tell him about the start of my apprenticeship at the King’s Head. My apprenticeship has increased my confidence speaking to new people and taught me the importance of teamwork as we work together to give our customers the best experience possible. I look forward to seeing Graham at the King’s Head soon and making him a delicious hand stretched pizza.”
Graham commented: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to earn, learn, and try a new career path. That’s why I was delighted to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week by speaking to Callum and Spencer, two hard working young men who are at the start of what I am sure will be a thriving career in the hospitality sector. If you’re in Beverley this weekend, make sure to try the delicious Mac and Cheese at The Altisidora or the mouth-watering hand-stretched pizza at The King’s Head.”
